Friend, If you looked into my studio earlier this year leading up to my solo art show, you would have seen giant, 30x40" canvases (and larger), layers upon layers of acrylic paint, and a creative process dependent upon my ability to control the brush to render lifelike images. I knew where each stroke belonged and was determined to control the outcome of each piece (to an extent). It was a beautiful, successful season, and I am still celebrating how those pieces are finding their places in the world. In fact, I want to send a special thank you to the local pastor who recently acquired my large acrylic piece, El Rai. Hearing his inspiring vision for the piece filled my heart, and I am so deeply grateful that it has found a home where its depth and meaning will be truly appreciated. As wonderful as that season was, the intense push left me deeply burnt out. (I've mentioned this before.) Combine that burnout with a full-time director job, a busy toddler, and being in my (now) third trimester with baby number two, and my entire being started yearning for a change of pace. Lately, I’ve traded the giant canvases for tiny 4x6" sheets of paper. I've traded thick acrylics for fluid watercolors. I've slowed down my pace, and truly...? I feel so much peace. Watercolors are far more unpredictable than acrylics. I have less control. The water moves how it wants on the paper. It forces me to be curious, to let go, and to rest. It has become a beautiful reminder of Proverbs 3:5, that leaning on my own understanding is exhausting, but trusting God with each detail brings true and divine peace. What this means for you as a supporter: I am officially entering a "small and slow" season for the foreseeable future. My art is taking a drastic shift into intimate, faith-filled watercolor explorations of flowers (which remind me of how God cares for the lilies, and how much more He cares for each of us — His children!). These new pieces aren't for sale; they are just for my own healing and learning right now, though I have been sharing them with a select few friends close to me in the form of birthday cards and personal "thank you's". I may make prints of them in the future. (See below for some recent examples. Which detail is your favorite?) But I still want to share my past work with you! --> As a thank you for being here, you are automatically entered into my monthly giveaway for a free open-edition print of my original acrylic works. The winner from the June drawing is... ...drumroll ...drumroll ...(more) drumroll ...Justin!! Congratulations Justin! Keep an eye out for a separate email from me! Want to increase your odds? Hi Reader! Do you ever struggle with imposter syndrome? You know — that illogical feeling that you're a fraud or incompetent, despite all the evidence clearly proving otherwise? That's what I've been dealing with lately. Maybe you can relate. After my solo exhibit in February (i.e., a very big accomplishment), I felt burnt out. The ease and joy I once felt when painting had somehow been replaced with tension and stress. I knew it was time for a shift. So, after lingering around for a while, I...
Hi Reader. As you know, I am a painter... who also wears a lot of other hats. Wife. Mom. Sister. Daughter. Friend. Oh... and of course, full-time employee (for the time being at least).. Between entertaining a toddler, attending Teams meetings, picking up and dropping off said toddler, spending time with hubby, doing house chores, time with God in my studio has felt... hard. Can you relate? (Even if you aren't an artist of many hats, I feel like you can). And just like I haven't, given up on...
